Graduate students receive fellowships for church work
6/12/2001 News media contact: Linda Green · (615) 742-5470 · Nashville, Tenn NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) - Two United Methodist graduate students have received fellowships that will help them prepare for teaching or administrative positions in the church.
Benjamin L. Hartley and Gwen E. Stetler are recipients of the Diaconia Graduate Fellowships for doctoral studies, awarded by the United Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry's Section of Deacons and Diaconal Ministries. The fellowships are designed to increase the effectiveness of teaching and administration in schools of theology, colleges and universities, and institutions and agencies of the church.
Open only to members of the United Methodist Church, the awards are made annually to graduate students selected for their intellectual competence, academic achievements, promise of usefulness, personal qualities, and clarity of spiritual purpose and commitment.
Hartley, a member of University United Methodist Church in East Lansing, Mich., is enrolled in a doctorate program at Boston University with a particular focus on church history and missionology. He will receive his award when he is commissioned.
Stetler, a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Columbus, Ohio, is enrolled in a doctorate program at Ohio State University in the field of social work.
Each will receive a $7,000 scholarship from the Ministerial Education Fund, which supports students preparing for teaching and leadership positions in the church.
